2011 --
for solo trumpet

Winning entry for the John Armitage Memorial (JAM) call for music

The contemporary fanfare Place and Time is for a lone trumpeter in a cavernous space. Conceptually, the contrasting staccatissimo blasts, controlled sustained pitches and flowing legato figures all serve to accentuate the resonance of the given location, and invite engaged listening to not only the music but also the subsequent natural enveloping textures. Stylistically, this piece is a whirlwind tour of musical interests, from stark minimalism to virtuosic jazz to expressive Romanticism, and was composed with equal parts meticulous planning and free improvisation
